This was my first graphic novel and I have to admit I was a bit sceptical and did put off reading it despite my being a total feminist and interested by the suffrage movement.
Luckily, my first apprehensions were enjoyably proved wrong as I loved this book pictures and all. It follows the story of Sally Heathcote, a working class girl who is employed by Mrs Pankhurst as a housemaid, and as a consequence is enlisted in the Women’s Suffrage Movement.
The pictures were emotive and in fact add to the story rather than take away from it, which is what I had feared. In moments they added suspense and moved the plot on nicely to make the book fast-paced and exciting.
I found this book moving and I think this was mainly down to the illustrations. However, at points I did find it quite hard to discern characters from one another as they were drawn very similarly but this didn’t take away from my enjoyment too much.
Sally Heathcote: Suffragette was also incredibly well-researched. It was factual and described the political amendments and decrees in an informative yet accessible way; I found that I learnt more about the suffrage movement from reading this book.
If you are interested in the suffragettes I highly recommend this book, even if you’re not usually a fan of graphic novels. It exceeded my expectations as someone who doesn’t like graphic novels so I urge others to try it as well.
I think graphic novel fans would enjoy it also as the story is gripping and quite action-packed. The storyline is exciting and well thought out to give a wide overview of the suffrage movement. I was very pleasantly surprised.
