When Mum leaves home, Ruby, Tizz and Sammy are forced to cope alone. But as time passes, they realise that perhaps Mum will take longer than they ever expected. How are they going to buy food when their money has run out?
The thing I love about this book is that a lot of real life facts are woven into a children's book. At many points in the story, I asked myself: "What would I do if I was in this situation?" and I was left speechless. My personal favourite character has to be Tizz, because her personality is very believable. I can think of a lot of people who she reminds me of. Perhaps everyone would take advantage of the situation if they were left alone at home.
The only thing I didn't really understand was the need to be so secretive. I would definitely be tempted to tell a close friend or else I would give up trying to survive altogether. I completely understand their fear of going into care, but wouldn't you eventually decide that it would be better to call a relative or friend?
Even when Mum returns, Ruby discovers she has been keeping a terrible secret, and it is a secret that might tear them apart forever.
