The Double Life of Cora Parry by Angela McAllister – review

ellathebookworm: 'The only criticism I have to make is that the ending happened rather fast...'

I really liked this book, even if it was a bit clichéd at the beginning, in my opinion.

It was about an orphan living in Victorian Britain, called Cora Parry. She is taken in by a mysterious girl who Cora is suspicious of. To pay off her debt to the girl, she has no choice but to become a thief. To help her cope with the guilt, Cora creates Carrie, the one who does all of the thieving. But soon things become out of hand and Cora struggles to explain everything that Carrie does, because it seems to her like her alibi has a mind of her own...

Where does Carrie end and Cora begin?

This book is full of unexpected twists, and McAllister really made me sympathise with Cora but dislike Carrie, which I'm guessing was the intended effect. I loved it how within the plot, there were so many little intertwined things going on in the background that you barely notice, but at the end they all link together (don't worry, I won't tell you how).

The only criticism I have to make is that the ending happened rather fast, but if the author had spaced it out a little more, it would have made top standard. And Cora has a most unlikely rescuer!
