The Ask and The Answer by Patrick Ness – review

BUKI: 'This book is an exciting science-fiction adventure that makes you want to never put it down'

This is the second book of the Chaos Walking Trilogy. It's set in New World (a fictional place) and is about a boy called Todd who is trying to escape from his worst enemy, Mayor Prentiss. He finds a girl called Viola; Todd had never seen a girl or woman before because they were all killed during the Spackle War. They run together to Haven only to find the Mayor waiting for them...

When the first people arrived in New World they caught a disease called the Noise. The Noise means that you can hear everybody else's thoughts. For some reason only the men got the Noise; women were just naturally immune to it.

This book is an exciting science-fiction adventure that makes you want to never put it down (I literally never could, even for meals!) It is described in the first person narrative so well that you feel as if you are the main character. My favourite part is when the Spackle army come back at the end to avenge the rest of the Spackle that were brutally killed in the genocide committed by the Mayor.

If you like science-fiction books, then this is a masterpiece worth a try. (This and its sequels, The Knife of Never Letting Go, and Monsters of Men are all winners of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, by the way!)
