Steve Carell is set to star in and produce The Priority List, a film based on David Menasche's memoir of living with brain cancer.

Carell, best known for his comedy work but increasingly finding his way into serious acting roles, will take on the part of the high school teacher who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2006, and who subsequently decided to get in touch with as many of his former students as possible.

Menache's book, whose full title is The Priority List: A Teacher's Final Quest to Discover Life's Greatest Lessons, saw the former teacher tour some 50 cities across the US. The title refers to his favourite teaching technique, which was to ask his students to rank concepts in order.

Rights to the book were bought by Warner Bros, but no details on who will direct have been released.
