I recently finished reading this book, my younger sister bought it for my birthday. I'm not terribly keen on thrillers - scary stories have never normally been my thing, especially when I usually read at night. Despite this, I found the book very hard to put down. I think that's the effect a thriller has on you really; it leaves you dying to know what happens next!

Getting more to the point, the question is: what made it a good book?

Well, the beginning certainly gripped my attention; how many 14 year old girls stagger upon a few dead bodies in a densely wooded forest...at night? The whole setting of the book is perfect: a mysterious hotel; kind, new, family owners who've just moved to the countryside; a dark forest and a gossiping village. What better place for a murder?

While Maya (the protagonist) begins to feel alone, with everyone beginning to doubt her discovery in the woods, a dark presence is haunting the hotel, and a mysterious creature with glowing yellow eyes is always waiting outside her window. The book chronicles a series of events that leave you wondering which person is really responsible.

However, the book doesn't unfold so clearly - it remains a thriller in the sense that the events that take place at the start of the book also take place again at the end. Not only this, but the mysterious creature with glowing eyes is very symbolic throughout the book - and you start to wonder what significance it holds.

I highly recommend this book for both teenage girls and boys - I guarantee you'll enjoy it... Just avoid reading it at night!
