How should we remember Ted Hughes? As one of Britain's greatest poets, the bard of dead pigs and malevolent pike? As the Murderer of Sylvia Plath? Not today. Today we celebrate Ted Hughes the environmentalist.
A keen fisherman, Hughes was heavily involved in campaigns to clean up Britain's rivers. He lobbied Michael Heseltine and Margaret Thatcher, and learned so much about sewage disposal that he even gave evidence at a public inquiry. Ted Hughes: Eco-Warrior (11am, Radio 4) revisits his campaigns. Simon Armitage presents.
Elsewhere, there's a strong entry for the Silly Title of the Year award. The Great Hargeisa Goat Bubble (2.15pm, Radio 4), by Julian Gough, is the tale of an encounter, one snowy night on a railway platform, between a young Irish orphan, Jude, and Dr Ibrahim Bihi, a Somali who has made and lost a fortune in the virtual goat market. As Dr Bihi relates the story of his rise and fall, he takes the opportunity to educate Jude in the workings of the modern markets. Yes, it sounds like horror, but it's actually a comedy.
