Two time Carnegie Medal Winner and YA favourite, Patrick Ness has revealed the title of his new book: The Rest Of Us Just Live Here, which will hit shelves on 28 August 2015.

Patrick revealed the title on his Twitter this morning and published the first line on his Tumblr blog, along with a synopsis.

The first line of The Rest of Us Just Live Here is:

On the day we’re the last people to see indie kid Finn alive, we’re all sprawled together in The Field, talking about love and stomachs.

On the inspiration behind his next book, Patrick Ness said he asked himself, “What if you lived in a world a lot like a YA novel? Where people you know have already battled vampires and zombies and soul-eating ghosts and whatever this new thing turns out to be? What if you just want to go to prom and graduate before someone goes and blows up the high school again?”

“I wanted to write a novel for anyone trying to live a normal life in a world gone mad, for anyone who actually has bigger problems than this week’s end of the world, for anyone who needs to find out that there are many different kinds of extraordinary.”

The excerpt, published on Patrick’s Tumblr blog, reads:

Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can... all the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway.

Patrick’s publisher at Walker Books, Denise Johnstone-Burt called Patrick “the outstanding YA author of his generation.”

“In The Rest of Us Just Live Here he breaks new ground, making the ordinary seem extraordinary and the extraordinary ordinary,” she said.

Patrick’s multi-award-winning novel A Monster Calls is currently being adapted into a film, starring Liam Neeson as the monster. It is due to hit screens in Christmas 2016.

The Rest of Us Just Live Here will be published by Walker Books in hardback on 28 August 2015.
