It’s been almost six months since we’ve had a fully democratic nomination process here on the Reading group. On the one hand, that’s a good reflection of just how many interesting book-related anniversaries and events have taken place over the last six months. On the other hand, sorry. It’s time you got a say.
Out last full vote looked at books published since 2010 and we ended up with the superb Caribou Island . Since that was a happy experiment, I thought we might repeat it, only this time looking at books published between 2000 and 2010. Which post-millennial books are standing the test of time? Which do you remember most fondly? Which have been unfairly neglected?
If you’re looking for inspiration, there are some fine lists of the best books of the decade here on the Guardian. You might also take a look on Salon or, if you trust in algorithms, Good Reads. And we make a good few other lists and listicles here that you might want to consider if you’re scratching your head. All other recommendations for good lists will be gratefully received. As indeed, will be your nominations.
All you have to do is list your favourite book from 2000 to 2010 in the comments below. I’d also like it if you could supply a small explanation of why this book matters to you – and why we should read it. I’ll print the nominations out and pull one out of a hat in round about a week’s time.
Finally, a bit of forewarning. Next month, I’m hoping to commemorate the work of EL Doctorow. If you’d also like to nominate a favourite novel of his for consideration in the comments below, please do. I’ll make a decision based on these suggestions next week too.
