The Madness is a book set in 1868. It is about Marnie Gunn, a 14-year-old girl, who lives in Clevedon, a coastal town. Her mother works as a dipper giving the famous sea cure. Marnie is physically impaired but she has been swimming nearly everyday since she was five so her disability doesn't get in the way, and in the water she is like a fish.
However in the village she is an outcast, so she has turned into to an anti-social person. She then meets Noah. He is rich and handsome, but Marnie hates him when she finds out that his father is building a pier, which means that the dipping business will be closed, stopping her family's source of income. However once they become friends she starts imaging a future with him and decides that they are the perfect match.
This book isn't worth the time it took me to read it. This is because it is written in such a way that you can't emotionally connect with the character of Marnie. At first she is portrayed as rude and obnoxious and then near the end she becomes obsessive and incredibly strange, and you just want to move away as far as possible from her.
I would give this book 0 out of 5 as I was so relieved when I finished it.
