Billy is a boy who rides into a town early one morning on a camel, Narcissus, as part of a circus. He is met by a girl called Hannah who hitches a ride with him and learns all about the show that they will put on that night. But not is all as it seems. The circus master, Armitage, is a mean, horrid crook who hates getting his clothes dirty and forced Billy's dad to leave the circus, and took it over from him. So Billy has to work for him, hoping one day to meet up with his dad again. He stays at the circus because the thought of being 'normal', and not being in a circus makes him feel ill.
Billy lets Hannah in on a secret – that the circus performers burgle the people who win the raffle. He gives her two free tickets to the performance, and she takes her grandma, as grandma falls asleep very quickly. This is necessary so that she and Billy can carry out their plan to put Armitage in jail, and to set Billy free.
The book is silly, with characters who are all very witty, and the girl Hannah is brave and fearless. She and Billy make an excellent team. The book ends with questions, so I really want to read the next one to see what happens.
