This is the story of a twelve-year-old girl called Jess. She is waiting for the birth of her twin brothers when she finds a mysterious glass flask. It's been hidden at the back of a drawer in a lovely wooden desk, which used to belong to her Aunt Edie who has just died.
Jess thinks that the flask is beautiful and perhaps even magic. Although it is a plain glass bottle, when it catches the light, you can see all the colours of the rainbow. More strange than that, the flask seems to breathe and might even contain some sort of life force.
When Jess' twin brothers are born, they are both very ill and need to stay in hospital. As the days go by, the survival of Jess' brothers seems to be linked to the flask – but how and why?
I like this book because it's all about relationships, caring for others and how you can fall in and out of love with people. The story's a bit complicated in places and sometimes the dialogue is not very convincing, especially when it's Jess and her friends speaking. The Flask is about a unique subject, so it's definitely worth reading to find out what happens to Jess' twin brothers.
