This book tells the story of a girl called Tizzie and her unusual mother. It starts as the two of them drive to Raven Mere, a large estate in the country where Tizzie's mum, Morag, has taken a job as a cook.
Tizzie is resentful about being on the move again and having to leave another friend in London where she has lived for most of her life, constantly changing homes and schools.
Her mum has been taken on by Finnigan who manages the estate and lives in a caravan. Tizzie is fascinated by the huge house and she can't wait for the family to return home because she is convinced that she will make friends with Greta, the owner's daughter.
Tizzie gets to know Mrs Crump, her son and her grandson Davy who live and work on the estate and she forms an odd sort of friendship with Finnigan.
About half way through this book I had to start reading it very quickly because I realised that all was not as it seemed. I am usually quite good at guessing how mysteries will end but this one stayed hidden till the very end of the book. I can tell you that it ends happily and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a lovely story with an unusual twist at the end.
