Jennifer and Minnie, and Reba and Amatullah

Family reviews: a selection

Yes it's that time of year again, not long till Christmas... To get you in mood, here's the first of our Christmassy family reviews

The dinosaur that pooped Christmas by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Pointer
Jennifer, Minnie (18 months) and Bebe (9 months)

This is the kind of book that no parent wants to be given - it's disgusting and rude and full of poo, however I thought it was brilliant!

Danny wants everything for Christmas but instead what he gets is a very hungry dinosaur, who proceeds to eat everything.

This has been written by two of the members of boyband Mcfly. I must say I am surprised (judgemental old me!) The pictures are colourful, lively and very graphic, in fact so graphic that I didn't read it to Minnie, I think this would be best saved for an older child who likes toilet humour.

It rhymes and is very funny so I will definitely be saving it for her when she is a bit older.

The Night before Christmas by Clement C More
Jennifer, Minnie (18 months) and Bebe (9 months)

'twas the night before Christmas...

I just adore this book, I was never one to get over excited about Christmas and I am married to a man who won't discuss Christmas presents until the January sales start, but now that I have children I am really getting into the swing of things!

The toddler is 21 months old so is fully aware of the lights going up around town (yes a bit too early for my liking) so this book is a fantastic starter to introducing her to the concept of Santa Claus and his reindeers.

I am sure everyone is aware of this poem and if not then please get this, it's a real treat. Beautiful old-style illustrations and a wonderful jolly elf like Santa make this feel like a vintage book that you might have had for years.

We have been reading it every night so far, it's a wonderfully lullaby of a poem so the writing is perfect for bed time reading. And it will be even more perfect on Christmas eve, I can't wait!

When It Snows by Richard Collingridge
Reba and Amatullah (2)

I read this book to Amatullah at bed-time. She normally talks about the pictures or the story but she didn't say a word. I'm guessing the illustrations were a bit too dark for her. They are gorgeously done and detailed but maybe a bit too scary for a young child like my daughter who remembers about monsters just before I'm trying to get her to go to sleep.

Personally, I liked the book. It's about the wild places a book and your imagination can take you. I want my daughter to be like me, magically transported away to far-away lands and lives whenever I pick up a book. I'll definitely read this book to her again but in the daytime. This book reminds me of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe film and as she enjoys that even though she is a bit scared of the creatures I'm sure she'll eventually enjoy When It snows.
