The Valley of Secrets by Charmian Hussey – review

AliRae: 'The secrets are not grandly revealed but instead the reader slowly pulls back layers of secrecy until the truth lies bare like some rare jewel finally clear of the disguising mud'

This book is, in truth, an unusual choice for me. An impulse buy, but one I have grown to adore. A beautiful world intricately familiar and strange, that both warms your heart and tugs at it strings.

Hussey tells the adventure of an abandoned boy who quite unexpectedly is thrust into a beautiful, remote Cornish Valley after the death of an unknown relative. From the moment he enters this ancestral home its secrets pull him deep into mysteries and amazing adventures of the past combined with the tantalising secrets still hiding in the long-abandoned shadows.

Unlike many books the truth of these secrets is not grandly revealed but instead the reader –and in my opinion preferably - slowly pulls back the layers of secrecy until the truth lies bare like some rare jewel finally clear of the disguising mud. This is not of course to say that the rest of the book is mud because nothing could be further from the truth in fact it is wonderfully written, memorable and something as a whole to be cherished and re-read a thousand times over until the spine breaks and the paper edges are worn.

It should then be read again.

5 Stars.
