The One Dollar Horse tells the story of 15 year old Casey Blue, a volunteer at Hope Lane riding school (nicknamed 'hopeless lane' by its staff). Then a twist of fate causes her and her criminal father to rescue a racehorse from the knackers yard and, along with her friend Mrs Smith, start training for the prestigious Badminton horse trials.
I couldn't help but wonder if I would have enjoyed the book more if I had been a massive fan of horses, as details of the horse world often outshone the storyline which at points was overly predictable and didn't leave much room to get to know how the characters tick or explore the relationship between Casey and Peter. However, this was a book I couldn't put down and proved to be very compelling through all my negative thoughts and doubts. One for the horse lovers out there I think.
