The Bad Girls Club by Rhian Tracey – review

OrliTheBookworm: 'I like the idea of the radio station book club, but the whole flirting and kissing thing makes this book very teenage'

My opinions are varied on this book – I love the plot line and how it is set out. However, I still think it is shallow and stereotypically girly.

I think this is such a fantastic plot and there could be so many brilliant things you could do with it to engage readers, but it disappointed me. An interesting and unique plot line about a female book club disappears and it turns into just another teenage book about boyfriends, kissing and girls back-stabbing one another.

Four girls - Mary, Bea, Meena and Atlanta - are thrown together when they are picked for very different reasons by their teacher to form a book review club. Their discussions and reviews will be heard on the radio, chaired and presented by the incredibly cool Jazz. As the girls gradually relax and talk more and more animatedly about what they think about the different books, they find they are learning from, as well as about, each other.

And so they become friends. Until one day Mary does the unforgivable and, having flirted outrageously with Bea's new boyfriend, makes an all-out play for him. The tender new friendship of the foursome is fractured as a result of what Mary has done.

I like the first part of the book, and I think the way the narrators swap is very well done and makes complete sense. I like the idea of the radio station book club, but the whole flirting and kissing thing makes this book very teenage.

I think for a teenage girl audience, this book is a light, girly read but I would have portrayed the general plot idea very differently to make it readable for girls of all ages. However, this book is a good read, if not quality reading material.
